Correspondence of the Baker and Ellis families, together with two account books for the grain and feed company H.C. Ellis & Co. Letters from 1848-1894 are entirely from the Baker family, beginning with those of George H. Baker. Beginning in 1870, correspondence becomes primarily that of his son, Charles Baker, and his wife, Dora Burtchaell Baker; correspondents include Dora's sisters and mother, and a friend, Mary Brainerd, as well as Charles's father and sister. There is a significant number of letters between Dora and Charles, as work or family matters intermittently separate them. The collection also includes letters from Dora's brother, Bart Burtchaell, written while he was a soldier in the Philippine-American War. Ellis family correspondence begins in 1900, with letters to Harry Ellis filed together with letters to Dora Baker and her daughter Amie. Ellis correspondence consists primarily of letters to Harry from his friends, parents, and sister Ruth, and a few letters by Harry himself. There are also several letters from the 1906 earthquake and fire. A small amount of ephemera, including cabinet cards and cartes-de-visite, receipts, and photographs are interspersed with the correspondence.
